	Eco-friendly advertising Mark Buxton coaches his ad clients on creating green campaigns. BY ASHLEY ELIOT OC METRO MAGAZINE Published: March 01, 2009 When Mark Buxton founded Huntington Beach-based Bolt Advertising two years ago, he decided he wanted his agency to serve a greater purpose in the community. So he put green practices into place and made a commitment to help his clients go green, as well. “Businesses are the biggest polluters,” says Buxton. “Business packaging alone makes up approximately 41 percent of that total waste.” For many companies, efforts to reduce carbon footprints have become a daily routine. Now, with Buxton’s help, companies can also green their advertising and marketing efforts. A few of Bolt’s clients include Quantum, Pacific Family Medicine and Westline Real Estate. “We worked with Quantum by getting them to print their last three brochures on FSC-certified paper with 10 percent post-consumer content and nontoxic inks,” Buxton says. “We are currently working on two more brochures using the same printing.” One of the resources Buxton recommends is neenahpaper.com, a site that determines how much you can save by using recycled goods. Click on the Eco Calculator to estimate the amount of trees, water and energy you conserve. Other tips Buxton offers for greening advertising efforts: Print ad tools on FSC-certified paper, which is made out of recycled materials; purchase high post-consumer printing paper; send documents digitally instead of faxing or mailing them; and organize recycle days so that employees can bring in unwanted computers, cell phones and other devices for transport to local recycling centers. “My goal is to make most of the businesses in Orange County take some sort of initiative on their printing, use recycled and sustainable paper products to reduce the depletion of forests and waste, and get all employees on board to be aware of their own waste,” Buxton says.
